Olivier Pringal was born in the North of France, and his contemporary drawings take inspiration from Flemish Masters such as Vermeer and the portraits of Rembrandt. Other sources of inspiration for Pringal include black and white photography, and American Comics from the 1960s. Pringal’s singular use of pastel chalk enables him to experiment and play with shade and light — characteristic of the Flemish painters — in order to convey a particular emotion in a look, or a movement. From chalk alone, the emotion and character of an individual is built up through a chiaroscuro that is at once highly characteristic of Fine Art, and simultaneously contemporary in its subjects.
