Kit Bernal is an artist and curator, who interprets the relationships between images, objects and spaces. With a special interest in interiors and institutions, Bernal uses an intersectional and de-colonial lens to examine the ways we create meaning from looking. For Bernal, seeing precedes looking, which precedes knowing — not in the definitive sense, but in the transient and emotional sense. The constant saturation of images that around us, both physical and digital, has meant that the average person is more visually literate than ever before. Exploring how images create meaning in relation with each other and the space in which they exist forms the cornerstone of Bernal’s practice. This artistic research primarily manifests in Bernal’s work through a signature transfer of images between collage, installation and photography. Reproductions of art, old family photos, Polaroids and ripped out pages of magazines interact both with their juxtaposition against one another and through their placement within broader physical environments. The spatial relationship alters the individual meanings of this combined imagery through the power of context — one that is re-contextualised once again, when the artwork is flattened back into image, in the documentation of the camera. Parallel to Bernal’s artistic practice is her engagement with curation, an activity which also focuses on the relationship, arrangement and contextualisation of images and objects within physical space. Curation asks not only what is, but what there might, believing in the transformative power of the gallery to address its own structure. Drawing on an unusual combination of both artistic and curatorial skillsets, Bernal's unique works have lead her to be identified as one of the youngest attendees at the Otis College of Art and Design’s Emerging Curators Retreat in 2018. Kit Bernal currently lives and works in Seattle, USA.
