Teodora Grkinić started her creative career as a fashion designer at age nineteen. Even at this early age, Grkinić had uncovered a strong fervour for painting whilst attending classes at the Faculty of Fine Arts for Fashion Design in Belgrade in 2008. Drawn to fashion in concert with the local business of her family in fashion design, Grkinić ran her own clothing line for more than several years. The turning point for Grkinić was when she found a discarded box full of slide films in front of a house which had been put on sale. Strongly inspired by photographs, Grkinić soon started reinventing this material as if impressionist paintings. Grkinić always felt that her spirit was one of an earlier era, and she channels historical and real-life moments from the 60s and 70s from the perspective of an anonymous photographer. Through interpreting and revitalising lost moments in her own style, Grkinić fulfils an ongoing project and fulfils a dream she had almost left forgotten. The highly expressive style of Grkinić’s paintings evoke strong feelings, a chaotic dance of hard strokes and numerous layers of dripping paint. Grkinić’s tangible and visceral expression is a testament to the fact that she sees her work primarily as craft, rather than art.
