Betty Árbol is originally from Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Árbol graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design from the Autonomous University of Cd Juarez in 2011, where she continues to live and work today. Árbol is one of a handful of new and emerging artists from Juárez who are seeking to establish a scene for artistic expression and to invite new perspectives on the city — one which has seen many years of violence, but one which Árbol finds, as her natural home, filled with beauty, humour, and resilience. Árbol states that you feel this when walking in the streets of the city, where she gleans her inspiration for her artistic works: “Not everything is violence. Here, we are as resilient, surviving a lot of things, but trying to be happy to”. From this rich cultural heritage the contemporary artists find that there are many sources from which to establish an identity, and Árbol displays clear influences from the bright colour ranges of Mexico and humorous references to multiple cultural traditions. The articulation of serious contemporary issues with humour reflects the spirit of the city from which Árbol both works and lives. She has participated in numerous artistic projects, individual exhibitions and artistic residences.
