Alma Alloro is originally from Tel-Aviv, Israel and currently living and working in Berlin. Alloro sees that in art, all media was once seen as ‘new’ media. She is interested in exploring ideas about new media as a universal concept; drawn to moments in history where a medium was fresh and unexplored. In Alloro’s work, she seeks to recreate these moments artificially, in laboratory-like conditions. Each new work begins with a strict set of rules as part of the core concept, restrictions that mimic how artists are tied to the limitations of the medium of their time and place. Fascinated by the “Avant-Garde” of the early 20th century in Modern Art, Alloro finds particular resonance with the Dadaists, Futurists, and the Bauhaus school. With references to movement and technological developments of their time, Alloro’s works seek a parallel dual and simultaneous engagement through using digital media and handcrafted formats to repeat this message in our current times. Through this combination, she highlights the limitations of hand-made objects in our digitally orientated world. Alloro brings these two together particularly in the continual use of the motif of patterns — endlessly repeating shapes on a surface in a process that involves both meticulous and repetitive labour, reinforcing an aesthetic that is at once hand-made and in another sense of reproduction and technology.
