Marija Djeranović was born in Belgrade, Serbia, in 1988. After finishing highschool, Djeranović in fact began her creative journey when first studying Archeology in the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade. In the beginning of her studies, Djeranović uncovered drawing excavated artefacts and realised that what was calling her most, was art. Djeranović entered the Art Academy in Belgrade where she found her best creative practices in printmaking and illustration. The inspirations for this artist stem from nature, where she often makes hiking trips and visits rural areas of her home country, Serbia, in seeking inspiration. We find that the subjects of Djeranović’s works are often intimate and personal — people, books and lyrics of songs, that the artist draws upon in her life. The surreal and expressive style of Djeranović is highly characteristic, it retains a raw quality that feel close and connected to the hand of the artist in the medium of print. With the use of aquatint, dry needle, linocut and other mixed techniques, we find a variety of forms through which Djeranović is able to express her particular creative vision.
