Minna Sjöholm’s abstract landscapes are bewitching portrayals of nature, encompassing at once solitude and loneliness, but also a comforting peace and melancholy pleasure in the catching of a beautiful moment. Sjöholm’s canvases have been described as dialogues between light and shadow, where each takes on its own individual significance. We see in Sjöholm’s paintings the Finnish origins of the artist, undoubtedly present in the influences on her use of melancholic colours and the particular articulation of light appearing out of the darkness. The views reminisce both of the dramatic forms of the landscape in the Northern Hemisphere and the utterly unique twilight present in this part of the world — where in Winter one sees daylight reduce to only a few, precious hours. Sjöholm seeks to paint the reality that she sees and experiences before her, to understand the world that we are living in. The artist states that she thinks about the importance and the vanity of things, about the rush, and of looking without seeing. Sjöholm takes away fussy details, in order to let light pass through the darkest of darks.
