Pavel Acevado’s works, whereby images are firstly carved on linoleum or wood plate, and later printed on paper or painted on a wall, are the result of a life-long learning process. The artist’s journey began in the printmaking workshops, talleres, in Oaxaca City, Mexico, where he was educated predominantly in traditional technical skills such as lithography, woodcarving, and drawing. In this period of time, Acevedo found the portrait was the subject for him — one that enabled him to communicate with others. Portraiture took on a new found significance for the artist in 2010, when he left Oaxaca and moved to California, USA. Once moving to the States, Acevado’s practice began to incorporate relief prints, and he found it was a way to talk about his new home and adjusting to life in America. For Acevado, art became a way to find himself in a this country. Continuing to focus on the portrait, it proved both a challenging and appealing subject for the artist — Acevado recalls that the portrait “turned into a portal, where I could tell stories and try to find my language as an artist.” For Acevado, “Every portrait that I have carved or drawn has picked up stories of struggle, hope, highways, cities, animals, houses, protest, signs, injustice”. The power to exist between two cultures was no longer Acevado’s goal; his purpose was to create a third space, a world with other possibilities, through his images and artistic production. Acevado’s works embody where he comes from, and seeks to pay homage to culture and tradition in a contemporary way. Acevado’s creations now allow new and other stories of struggle and perseverance shared by others to be had and told through the single and emphatic power of the portrait.
